[CIVIL] Is it possible to evaluate the seismic performance of short-span bridges?

Question

Is it possible to evaluate the seismic performance of short-span bridges?

Answer

Evaluate the seismic performance of short-span bridges.

However, according to the "Guidelines for Seismic Performance Evaluation of Existing Facilities (Bridges) - Explanation and Examples", only detailed seismic performance evaluation of piers, bridge supports, and support support lengths are prescribed, so in the case of a short-span bridge, only the support evaluation can be performed except for piers.

(For abutment, it is suggested to follow the "Guidelines for Evaluation of Seismic Performance of Foundations and Foundations of Existing Facilities".)

To perform seismic performance evaluation of abutments in alternating support, you need to change the Evaluation Group to Abutment Group as shown in the diagram below and define it accordingly.

[ Evaluation Group Dialog Box ]

When you select Abutment Group, the dialog changes to ask you to select Link Type and Support Type for the abutment information, and you can perform a standalone abutment assessment even if you don't have review data for the column.

For the Link Type, select all paired vertices of the Link if the piers are simulated by an Elastic Link, as in the Pier Link definition.

The Support Type option is available if the support is defined as Support, such as a port support with a clear fixed end and free end, and will select the nodes that defined the Support.

When you define only the abutment evaluation data for alternates and perform the evaluation, it displays a warning message as shown in the figure below. This message is a cautionary message indicating that there is no evaluation group for piers, so you can safely ignore it.

After pressing the OK button, you can see that the alternating fiducial evaluation is performed as normal, but it may appear that it is not performed because the evaluation group is small and the duration of the fiducial evaluation is very short.

You can see that the Evaluation Report Print function is activated as shown in the figure below, or you can check that the evaluation is completed normally through the contents of the Message Window at the bottom.
