Question

When analysing nonlinear members such as tensile or compressive sheathing for temperature variations, it may not converge under static loading conditions, but may converge under load combinations that include such loading conditions. So, is there a problem?

 

Answer

Analyses using nonlinear members such as tension or compression members may not converge under certain load conditions, but may converge under load combinations that include them.

In this case, the results of the analysis for the converged load combinations can be considered acceptable. In general, when a nonlinear member is used, only the results of the individual unit loads or the combined unit loads give valid results. However, it is possible that some of these unit loads may not converge. Since the results of each load are not affected by the others, the results of the converged load combination are not affected by the lack of convergence for some of the loads.
