Question
How to extract lines from the edges of members?
Answer
In CIM, when working in the modelling environment a feature to trace the 3D geometry is available.
This feature is called Extract. This can be found in the interface by navigating the ribbon
Feature > Extract. as shown in the image below.
This features is also available in the library modes (Point, Curve, and Assembly Unit)
Lets consider an example of a rectangular slab as shown in the image below.
With the help of Extract function, a user can easily trace the edges of a geometry.
Above example is carried out in the BASE MODE. Follow the steps illustrated below.
Step 1- From the Feature ribbon Click on Extract
The properties panel displays the Extract sub function option as shown below.
Here, under the Extract type sub function keep the default selection Sub Shape to Body as is.
Step 2- Click the drop down menu under Selection Filter and choose Edge.
Now, under the Select Target sub function Select button is activated, use the cursor to hover at the 3D geometry. This enables the program to provide selection of edges from the respective geometry, as shown in the image below.
Step 3- Click to choose the edges of the geometry, and use keyboard Ctrl button for multiple edge selection. The Select button updates and displays the total number of selection made as shown below.
Step 4- Click on the Green Tick icon to apply changes and close the function, as shown below.
Now, to verify the output, let's hide the geometry from the model space.
Step 5- Click anywhere at the surface of the geometry to select, as shown below.
Step 6- Use cursor right-click to activate model properties drop-down menu and choose the Hide Selected option as shown below.
Now, the final output of the extract function as edges of the 3D geometry are displayed in the model space, as shown below.
