[CIVIL NX] Effect of Unstrained Length, Lu in Cable Forces

Question

How to calculate the cable tension forces corresponding to specified sag deformation?

Answer

During geometric non-linear analysis, the cable element is converted into an elastic catenary element and the unstrained length, Lu is considered.

Assume a 10 mm diameter cable of length 50 m split into elements of length, L = 0.5 m each. We will perform GNLA to obtain the cable pre-tension corresponding to a specified sag deformation of 5% of cable length. A sag deformation of 2.5 m corresponds to an unstrained element length, Lu = 0.5033 m. (Lu > L)

The calculations are available in the attached Excel document.
