[GTS NX] How to Account for Volume Loss in TBM Tunnels

Question

How to Account for Volume Loss in TBM Tunnels

Answer

Volume loss in a TBM tunnel can be considered by applying shrinkage or simulating a contraction around the tunnel lining. This can be implemented by selecting the relevant beam or shell elements in a 2D or 3D model.

  • The ‘Contraction’ parameter represents shrinkage in the circumferential direction of the tunnel.
  • The ‘Contraction Inc.’ parameter accounts for shrinkage in the longitudinal (excavation) direction of a 3D tunnel.
  • The ‘Rep. Depth’ (Representative Depth) defines the reference depth used to calculate this shrinkage in the excavation direction.

To apply this contraction, a value is specified as a strain percentage.
