Question
How to Disassemble a Shape into Sub-Shapes?
Answer
The Explode tool allows you to disassemble a complex shape into its individual sub-shapes.
Step 1: Select the shape you wish to disassemble.
Step 2: Set the disassemble level, which defines how far to break down the shape.
Available Disassemble Levels:
- Sub Shapes – Breaks the shape into elements of the next lower geometry rank.
-
Solid
-
Shell
-
Face
-
Wire
-
Edge
-
Point
Notes:
-
Disassemble only applies if the selected shape has a higher geometric rank than the chosen disassemble level.
-
For example, a Solid can be disassembled into Shells, Faces, Edges, etc.

-
The [Sub Shapes] option is context-sensitive and disassembles the shape into parts one level below its current rank.
-
Compound shapes (collections of simple shapes) will be broken down into their individual components when using [Sub Shapes].
